More often than not, Instagram witnesses over 60 million new photos to be uploaded every day. Since 2007, iPhone has changed the way we use digital photography.
But when Instagram was launched in 2010, it has truly revolutionized the world. Co-founder of The Photographic Journal, Dan Rubin says that he loves it just away and he shoots it every day.
The ease of sharing makes him take pictures everywhere he loves. IT TAKES PLANNING TO CAPTURE GOOD PHOTOS
Digitally capturing nice photographs from Instagram and shooting the film needs planning. There are occasionally happy accidents but they are rare, according to Wheatley.
You have to put yourself into the position to get the good picture. Experimenting with angles, location scouting, and planning on the light is very important to capture a great Instagram photo.

SHOOT OUT OF INSTAGRAM APP
Both Wheatley and Rubin use default camera app on Android and iPhone, instead of Instagram camera when shooting for social media.
They say that it is simple to access from home screen, lets them to take several shots of same scene without a lot of fumbling and it provides more control than camera of Instagram.
You have got just one shot with the Instagram camera. Wheatley says that he wants more control on selection process as it is like taking Polaroid. You can set focus and choose what to expose in the frame with default iPhone camera.
In order to shoot in low light conditions, both Wheatley and Rubin recommended Cortex Cam for such situations.
TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES
It doesn’t take just one shot to get an amazing picture to share on social media. Both Rubin and Wheatley said they shoot all day long and it often takes 10 to 20 frames of one particular subject.
According to Rubin, he finds the whole new photo feature in your iOS 8. It is helpful when it comes to shoot for Instagram. It’s been a week that he had been using iOS 8. It has become the part of his workflow and it is much similar to his Lightroom workflow from his DSLR.
BLUE HOUR AND GOLDEN HOUR
When Cortex Cam is a helpful feature for image capturing in dim lights, it is evident that smartphones do well in well-lit conditions. Backlight and lowlight really create problems for iPhone and you need to be careful with light. Blue hour and golden hour are the best time to capture photos. You have to program your day around such periods.

KEEP YOUR PHONE HORIZONTAL
Holding phone horizontally like you would with SLR is no brainer for Wheatley. According to him, it is easier to frame image later if he don’t crop it. He doesn’t shoot in square as you can limit yourself in the process of editing.
HASHTAGS – KEEP THEM CREATIVE AND SPECIFIC
Hashtags can really be effectively, but only when they are used well. Don’t spray your picture with 12 random and common hashtags like #love, #girl, #blessed, #bestagram, #hastag, #instamasters, #instagood etc.
It seems spammy. Hashtags should make Instagram a fun and creative place to be. If you want to get people to witness your photo and love it, you are doing wrong. Use one but correct hashtag.
USE THIRD PARTY EDITING APPS
Flexibility comes into play the moment Instagram opened doors to import images from camera roll. It means photographers are no longer restricted to just relying on Instagram filters.
According to Rubin, most of the editing apps are designed to free users from existing filters. When VSCO is still considered to be a gold standard for a lot of mobile shooters, there are lots of other apps which are best for micro adjustments. Here are some of the hottest favorite apps for Rubin and Wheatley –
• Anticrop – It works like content fill of Photoshop. Instead of cropping in, you have to crop out. It doesn’t work every time. But for things like lakes and skies, it does a great job for anything which is plain enough.
• Snapseed – It is a full-feature editor available for free. It has selective adjust option to place adjustment points on any area of image. It adjusts contrast, brightness, and saturation well.
• Afterlight – It is yet another full feature editor but it costs $0.99. Wheatley loves using it to include a white border across the photos which don’t fit Instagram’s standard square crop.
• VSCO Cam – It is a free app with in-app purchases. This is a fully featured editor which is the hottest favorite photo-processing app of a lot of mobile shooters and it does most of the adjustments like cropping, sharpness, white balance, temperature, contrast, exposure and applying VSCO preset. Rubin just loves selecting presets. It really suits his editing style and gets a more consistent look to his images.
Wheatley doesn’t do any editing in Instagram. But Rubin uses preset occasionally in his final edit. It is a lot easier these days due to extra control. You can apply one of such filters and dial it down. Sometimes he adds the little bit of Valencia or Rise, but around 5% to 6% gives little bit of edge when he post.

UPDATE YOUR PROFILE
Be sure your profile contains your website or blog address. Some photographers also prefer listing their email address so it can be easier for potential clients to contact them. Your bio should be less than 150 characters. Set your IG profile to public.
Share one photo per week at least. Don’t post too many pictures. You can post 1 to 2 pictures per day. Make sure to upload your best creation. Be sure to amaze your audience with your Instagram feed.
